Harlan E. Spence
Associate Professor of Astronomy and Space Physics
Professor
Spence received his BA in Astronomy and Physics from Boston University
and his MS and PhD degrees in Geophysics and Space Physics from
the University of California, Los Angeles.
He is currently a member of the NASA
Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission Definition Team and the NASA
Office of Space Science 1999 Roadmap Committee, and is chairing
NASA's Magnestospheric Constellation Science and Technology Definition
Team. Spence is a co-Investigator on the NASA/ISTP/GGS
POLAR , CEPPAD and
CAMMICE scientific investigations.
His primary research interests are in theoretical and experimental space
plasma physics, including: planetary magnetospheric and auroral physics; magnetic storms
and substorms ; building instrumentation for, and analysis of, energetic charged and
neutral particles in the natural radiation environment; global magnestopheric modeling;
space weather effects on man-made satellites; and nanosatellite constellations.
